Where’s my new phone?
I'm moving from contract to PAYG, buying a new phone and trying to port my number. Pain in the arse!
Posted 12 Apr 2007, mid-afternoon.
I’m paying o2 around £26 a month for my phone at the moment. Baring in mind I make approximately 0 calls each month and send only a handful of text messages, I don’t see the point in staying on a contract now that my 12 months is up. I could get an upgrade for free but it makes more sense to spend £60 on a new PAYG handset (nothing too fancy this time) which will pay for itself after a few months without the contract fee.
I’ve gone for a Motorola RAZR V3. According to reviews, it’s pocket-friendly and got a decent set of features (most of which I’ll never use). It’s been replaced as the ‘in-phone’ by later models including the V3i and the KRZR K1 so prices are pretty good.
Firstly, some praise for o2. I gave them a call on Tuesday to check that there wouldn’t be a problem porting my contract number to my new phone. After navigating the obligatory menu and a couple of minutes on hold, I got through to a really helpful lady who confirmed that there wouldn’t be a problem and quickly issued a PAC to allow me to transfer the number. She offered to text it to my old phone and told me that a hard copy would also be sent out in the post. Very cool.
Now we come to Phones4u. They ‘guarantee’ next day delivery by 13:00 on all orders (subject to stock, status, alignment of the planets etc.) I placed my order on Tuesday morning. At the time of writing (Thursday afternoon) it has not arrived. I sent them an email yesterday asking where it was - no reply. I gave them a call this afternoon - they do have stock but it hasn’t been dispatched yet because of a “delay in the system, somewhere”. Fingers crossed for tomorrow then! Place your bets…
