It's September again, which means it's my birthday again. I will be 23 - practically an old man! If you would like to give me a birthday present this year, I'd really like it if you could give $23.
Specifically, I'd like you to give $23 USD (£12.94) to the September Campaign which is part of Charity: Water.
It's 2008 and 1.1 billion people (1 in 6 of us) still don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. Many of these people walk for more than three hours every day just to collect water from swamps and muddy rivers. This is crazy. Not only is this water likely to make them sick, it's time that could be better spent working to support their families or going to school.
Most of us get presents on our birthday. Lots of them are things we don't really need. But in many places in the world, people don't have access to the most basic necessity: clean, safe drinking water. Because charity: water was born in September, we're starting the September Campaign. We're asking everyone born in September to ask for donations instead of presents for their birthdays, and help give 150,000 people in Ethiopia access to safe, clean drinking water.
One freshwater well in Ethiopia costs $4,000 USD (£2,250) and can serve 400 people.
100% of my birthday donations and those of the other folks taking part will go directly to sustainable water solutions in Ethiopia - you can see where your money ends up by checking out the GPS coordinates and photos on Google Earth.
Thank you!
