Lisa Wess has started a new tutorial series demonstrating how to build a bug tracking system with ExpressionEngine, beginning with setting up the infrastructure. It's another great example of the power and flexibility of the development platform. Strangely, I began that very project at the end of last year so it will be interesting to see how similar my implementation is. I'm sure there are things I could have done better.
Currently at Red Ant, we handle QA through a combination of email, Word documents, scraps of paper, telephone calls and the occasional spreadsheet. Most of the time and for the majority of projects it works reasonably well, but due to the size and number of projects we're dealing with, the time has come where we need something more controlled.
I spent a lot of time last year playing with various bug trackers but found them all either too simplistic, too crufty, to expensive or just not best suited to the way we do things. I also wanted to incorporate management of test cases, test runs and potentially a Wiki for associated documentation and resources. The 'QA Lab' I'm putting together will be able to handle all this and - having been designed to work specifically with our particular processes - do it with elegance.
I'll share details when I have more time.
